MAYA JUPITER TRANSCRIPT
What inspired Phenomenal?
MAYA: “Phenomenal” is a feel good song, it also takes inspiration from Jamaican
dance hall music, and the idea about dance hall and what I get from it is that it is a
woman’s domain. Basically women go and there are dancers that correlate with the
songs and they perform - but it’s basically a space where a woman can do her thing
and it is like “don’t bother me guy, it’s just about me and the music tonight”. And
that’s really the inspiration behind this particular song.
I also got inspired by Maya Angelo’s poem “Phenomenal Woman” and I wanted to
sort of play around with this idea of beauty and femininity, to create an empowering
song for women that was a bit tongue and cheek as well...that’s why I say “34 - 36
inch mind”. You know we are always talking about measurements, what we look like
physically, but what about our brains, what about what we think about? So it is feel
good and it is about empowerment.
How do you feel about the video?
MAYA: I feel wonderful about it, I think it is a really beautiful video and I think it
has a nice... it illustrates the message of the song and I love the little girl in the video.
I think she is absolutely beautiful and you know I hope people get the message about
finding that inner child, the inner child in all of us but also holding on to the idea that
we are always growing, we are always evolving and we should be empowered by that
and that we should be confident and own who we are.
